Description |
The development of the Bristol Type 171 started in 1944 and was led by the engineer Raoul Hafner, who had gained a lot of rotorcraft experience during the 1930s. The civil version, called Type 171, has been designed to accommodate four to five seats, while the military version, called Sycamore, has been created for search and rescue operations and reconnaissance tasks.
The machine uses a piston engine and wooden rotor blades. It was the first British helicopter to be awarded a certificate of airworthiness.
The Sycamore was a great commercial success, with most of the machines sold in the UK, Australia, Belgium and Germany. In 1959, the production of the Type 171/Sycamore ended.
