Description |
In 1991, Aerospatiale announced that it had started to develop the P120 as the successor to the successful Lama and Gazelle lines. The development was a joint effort between Aerospatiale, Singapore Technologies Aerospace (STAero) and the Chinese companies CATIC/Harbin. In 1992, the helicopter divisions of Aerospatiale merged with DASA to form the Eurocopter group, and the P120 was renamed as the EC120, which is known by the Chinese as the HC120. The first flight of the EC120 took place on June 9, 1995.
The EC120 is a five-seater, multipurpose machine with advanced technologies that are common in Eurocopter helicopters. The fenestron tail rotor and the Spheriflex® main rotor head are the most important of these.
The EC120 also uses composite materials extensively in its fuselage design and rotor blades. The cabin is spacious, making it comfortable for both pilot and passenger.
Eurocopter expected to sell over 2000 models, which turned out to be somewhat optimistic. However, the model is still popular, with over 550 units sold by 2008.
