Description |
With his model, C4, De la Cierva built the first autogiro aircraft that could actually make a controlled flight. By using flapping hinges, he resolved the problem of asymetric aerodynamic load caused by the speed difference between forward and retreating blades in forward flight. Although this idea had been proposed earlier, De la Cierva is credited with the first realisation of flapping hinges in a rotor system. The autogiro is not a helicopter; however, the use of flapping hinges in the C4 had a significant influence on their development.
