The Mi-17 is the export version of the Mi-8, and is a twin turbine, medium lift, transport helicopter. In Russia, it is known as the Mi-8M. There are both military and civilian versions. The main differences between the Mi-8 and the Mi-17 are the latter’s more powerful Klimov turbine engines and its use of the Mi-14’s dynamic system. The Mi-17 is easily distinguished from the Mi-8 by the fact that the tail rotor is mounted on the opposite side (port side).
