The Sapsan (Russian for peregrine falcon) is a five-seater, lightweight utility and training helicopter. It is similar to a Mi-34, with its combustion engine replaced by the French Turbomeca Arrius-2F turbo shaft engine. This adds a lot of power along with an engine weight reduction by a factor of two. The Turbomeca Arrius-2F engine also has a good international reputation, and is widely used in light helicopter models. These factors should all contribute to a second life for the Mi-34S2 Sapsan.
The Mi-34S2 will have to compete with models like Eurocopter's EC120. First deliveries are planned for 2016, but Russian Helicopters has stated that it will only start production when it has received enough orders. The Sapsan can be ordered with Russian or Western avionics.
