Description

The Kamov Ka-62 is a multi-role medium helicopter of Russian origin and is manufactured by the Kamov company. The Ka-62 is primarily a cargo transport, medevac and rescue helicopter, but has been adapted for corporate purposes in the oil and gas industries as well.

This new helicopter from Kamov succeeds the Ka-60 military helicopter, which was unveiled in 1997 and took flight for the first time in 1998. The new Ka-62 comprehensively updates the design of the Ka-60 in almost every way, but maintains the speed, frugal fuel needs and lifting power of its military genes.

Fast and with a fair cargo volume, the Ka-62 can reach 308 kph and cruise at 290 kph for 770km before its twin Turbomeca Ardiden 3G turboshaft engines use up the last drop of fuel.

The Ka-62 is a modern aircraft manufactured from equally modern materials. It was designed to be used for offshore operation, which means greater focus on redundancy and reliability. This is a main consideration behind the decision to use the Ardiden engines, as they make use of a modular design and a two-channel full authority digital engine (FADEC) system. Other design elements hint at this philosophy as well, such as the ducted anti-torque tail rotor. In the event of an unplanned landing energy absorbing and attenuating landing gear protect passengers and crew. It also possesses effective anti-icing and fire-fighting technology.

The Ka-62 is notable for the high amount of composite material in its components. Sixty percent of the airframe weight comes from polymeric material. It can operate in a large variety of conditions. Operating air temperatures range from -50°? to +45°?. In fact, the transmission assemblies and engines don’t require heating at temperatures above 35°? below zero.

Production began in 2008, but at the time of writing in 2015 the Ka-62 has yet to enter service after multiple production delays, its price is estimated to be around $8 million.
